Fluid Check

Is it important to regularly check the fluid in my vehicle? Should I check my own fluids or should I have a trained technician do it?

Regularly checking and topping up fluids in your car is an essential part of vehicle maintenance. Each fluid serves a specific purpose, and maintaining proper levels is crucial for the overall performance and longevity of your vehicle. Here’s why you should pay attention to these fluids:

  1. Coolant: Coolant is responsible for regulating the engine’s temperature. If the coolant level is too low, the engine can overheat, leading to serious damage. Regular checks help ensure that the coolant concentration is correct and that there are no leaks in the system.
  2. Brake Fluid: Brake fluid is crucial for the proper functioning of your vehicle’s braking system. Low brake fluid levels can lead to decreased braking performance and, in extreme cases, brake failure. Regular checks help identify potential issues and ensure the brake system’s reliability.
  3. Transmission Fluid: Transmission fluid lubricates the transmission components and helps regulate its temperature. Maintaining the correct fluid level is vital for smooth gear shifts and preventing premature wear on transmission parts. Insufficient or contaminated transmission fluid can lead to transmission problems.
  4. Windshield Washer Fluid: While not directly related to the vehicle’s mechanical performance, having enough windshield washer fluid is essential for maintaining visibility. Regularly topping up this fluid ensures you can keep your windshield clean, especially in adverse weather conditions.

There are some things you can do yourself if you have a safe and clean environment.  In most vehicles, it’s not hard to check your oil and even change your oil.  If you do choose to change your oil, ask yourself these questions:

Do I have the right tools?
Can I easily access the oil pan?
How will I dispose of the old oil?

We encourage you to learn as much as you can about your car and perform basic maintenance.  Also, listen and feel how the car is driving, if you feel a difference or hear a noise then take your vehicle to your mechanic and explain your concern.

Performing regular fluid checks is a preventive measure that can help you catch potential issues early on, preventing more extensive and expensive repairs. It’s also an excellent opportunity to inspect for leaks, damaged hoses, or other issues that may not be immediately apparent.

In addition to regular fluid checks, it’s advisable to take your car in for periodic inspections by a qualified mechanic. During an inspection, professionals can assess the overall condition of your vehicle, identify potential problems, and perform necessary maintenance tasks. This proactive approach can save you money in the long run by addressing issues before they escalate into major repairs. Regular inspections are particularly important for safety-related components like brakes, tires, and suspension systems. They help ensure your car is in good working condition, reducing the risk of breakdowns and enhancing overall safety on the road.
